Longtime ruler Joaquin Balaguer clung to a narrow lead in presidential elections. Opposition leaders accused election officials of keeping thousands of people from voting and altering ballot counts. International election monitors and diplomats confirmed some fraud on the part of the Balaguer-controlled election board. Leading challenger Jose Francisco Pena Gomez demanded a re-count.
