Sexist Wine Law

Share

* During a recent tour through the Napa Valley, I learned of an archaic law, a leftover from Prohibition days, wherein a male resident of California may, for his own use, produce wine in his home. A single male may produce 100 gallons year, a married male 200 gallons a year. In contrast, a woman may not produce any wine at all. The production for personal use requires a state license.

I would hope one of our more progressive lawmakers would set about removing this sexist law from the state books, which would probably bring about gratitude from female constituents.
