GNP Up 5.46% in First Quarter: The increase in the gross national product was 0.44% less than predicted three months ago, the Cabinet said. The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said the economy grew at a slower-than-expected rate due to a decline in the country’s trade surplus. The directorate cut its forecast for economic growth for the second quarter by 0.29% to 5.71% and lowered its prediction of GNP growth for all of 1994 by 0.26% to 5.94%. Taiwan’s GNP grew by 5.78% in 1993.
