Compaq No. 1 in First-Quarter PC Sales: The Houston-based computer maker sold the most personal computers worldwide in the quarter, beating perennial leaders International Business Machines Corp. and Apple Computer Inc. That moves Compaq Computer Corp. closer to its goal of being the world’s leading PC supplier. The company has said it expects to reach that goal by 1996. San Jose-based Compaq shipped about 980,000 PCs in the quarter, compared to 955,000 for IBM and 865,000 for Apple.
