Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa will be the guest preacher at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena on Sunday, June 5, at the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. celebrations of the Holy Eucharist.

It will be his first visit to the United States since the historic all-race elections in South Africa in April that ended white minority rule and catapulted former political prisoner Nelson Mandela to the presidency.

After the elections, it was Tutu who introduced Mandela as that nation’s new president on the Grand Parade in Cape Town after he was sworn in May 10.

As the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town and Anglican primate of Southern Africa, Tutu had long fought for an end to apartheid and minority white rule in South Africa. For his efforts, Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

The archbishop has had ties with All Saints since his first visit to the parish in 1984. The Rev. George Regas, rector of All Saints parish, and members of his staff have visited Tutu’s archdiocese over the years.

The Rev. Tim Safford of the parish staff said both services are expected to draw overflow crowds.

All Saints is at 132 N. Euclid Ave.
