Associated Press

Benjamin L. Hooks, former executive director of the NAACP, stepped down Friday as chairman of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

The conference has coordinated national campaigns that led to the enactment of several civil rights bills during the past 12 years.

A nominating committee is searching for a successor, officials said.
