The Chinese government expelled a visiting four-member South Korean television crew Friday because they had changed their travel itinerary without permission, the South Korean Embassy said.

The crew, from a provincial affiliate of MBC television, had arrived in China with plans to visit the coastal province of Shandong, but instead went to the city of Nanjing, Kim Myung-koo of the embassy’s information office said.

Chinese authorities have closely monitored the activities of foreign journalists in the weeks leading to the June 4 anniversary of the army attack on pro-democracy protesters in 1989. Last week, police burst into the home of one of the former 1989 protest leaders, Wang Dan, as he was being interviewed by the U.S. television station NBC and led the NBC crew away for questioning and reprimand.
