Fluor Daniel Awarded 2 Contracts in Canada

Fluor Daniel Corp. said it has been awarded two contracts for work in western Canada.

The company received a $133-million contract from oil and gas refiner Suncor Inc. for engineering, procurement and construction management services to build a scrubber unit to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions at Suncor’s Ft. McMurray, Alberta, oil refining plant.

Irvine-based Fluor Daniel was also awarded a contract by BHP Minerals Canada Ltd. to provide engineering services at a diamond mine in the Northwest Territories. Fluor Daniel did not disclose the value of that contract, which it shares with privately held Signet Engineering Pty. Ltd. of Perth, Australia.

The diamond mine, in the remote Lac de Gras region of the Northwest Territories, is jointly owned by BHP and Vancouver-based Dia Met Minerals Ltd.

Fluor Daniel said the mine, accessible for construction only by a winter ice road, is North America’s first commercial-scale diamond mine.
