BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Jackson Returns to Chicago, Leads Phillies Past Cubs, 4-2

Danny Jackson, who struggled through a 5-14 record in two seasons with the Cubs, pitched four-hit ball over eight innings for his 100th career win Thursday night to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over his former team at Chicago.

“I haven’t really worried about what happened here in Chicago,” said Jackson, who was 23-8 with Cincinnati in 1988. “That was three years ago. Now, I’m back to where I was in ’88.”

Jackson (7-1) gave up two singles to Mark Parent and a home run and a double to Shawon Dunston. Doug Jones gave up one hit in the ninth and earned his 13th save.

John Kruk and Kevin Stocker were activated from the disabled list and both started for the Phillies, who handed Anthony Young (3-4) the loss.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore 11, Detroit 5--Cal Ripken Jr. homered and drove in four runs and rookie right-hander Scott Klingenbeck won his major league debut, as the Orioles broke a three-game losing streak at Baltimore.

Klingenbeck (1-0) pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on six hits. Ripken’s four RBIs came after the game was tied, 4-4.

The victory helped the Orioles avert a four-game sweep to the Tigers, who had pitcher Storm Davis leave the game with a stiff back after pitching a scoreless third inning.
