Auto Makers Report Moderate Sales Gains: Domestic sales of cars and light trucks slowed slightly in May but still grew, as auto makers benefited from continuing consumer confidence and an aging auto fleet on the nation’s highways. Figures released by auto makers show that total sales by foreign and U.S. manufacturers were up about 3% from a year ago, with light trucks accounting for nearly all the growth. Ford Motor Co. said car sales were up 1.5%, while truck sales increased nearly 6%. Chrysler Corp.’s car sales were down 5%, but the company had the best May in its history for trucks. General Motors Corp.’s report was similar: Car sales were down slightly, but truck buyers pushed total vehicle deliveries up more than 1%. GM’s Saturn subsidiary reported earlier in the week that sales rose 14% from a year earlier.
