Teamsters to Move Quickly to Close Conferences: Union President Ron Carey said he will begin closing the four U.S. regional conferences early next week, and a court rejected opponents’ pleas to stop him. Dissidents had asked a federal judge in New York to impose a temporary restraining order to stop Carey from immediately closing the conferences, as approved in a vote Thursday by the Teamsters’ executive board. But U.S. District Judge David N. Edelstein in Manhattan rejected the request for a temporary restraining order, saying the regional conferences had “failed once again to show that they will suffer irreparable injury.”
