LOVIN’ CALIFORNIA: Romanian soccer team members exercised this week at the Newport Beach Athletic Club, and if they never win a World Cup match, they’ve had a lot of fun. . . . The StairMaster was a hoot to them, and local gymnasts had fun watching them try to convert pounds into kilos at the scales. But, says manager Bill Spurgeon: “They had a fantastic time trying everything, splashing in the Jacuzzi. They were like little kids. It was great.”

COPWATCHERS? Local police agencies have created a brouhaha, and a lawsuit, by photographing young people who dress or look like gang members. There’s a forum about it at 1 p.m. today at a Vietnamese community center, 15361 Brookhurst St. in Westminster. Speakers on “Guilt by Appearance” include lawyers who filed the class-action suit, parents and students. . . . Says forum spokesman Dan Tsang, “Many young people photographed were afraid to come forward before.”

ON HOLD: Vietnamese American activist Mai Cong will attend a White House reception Monday for Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. Cong, president of Vietnamese Community of Orange County, a nonprofit social service group, says “It is an honor for me, a Vietnamese American, to have received this invitation.” . . . But she told the White House at first: “I’m honored, but let me check my calendar and call you back.”

SOBER FOOTWORK: When members of the Placentia-based Dance Precisions were looking for a worthwhile charity for their annual fund-raiser, they didn’t have to look far. Kathy Hamill, mother of 8-year-old dance member Brittany, is also active in Orange County Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The 80-girl team chose that group to benefit from its show tonight at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. . . . “I was surprised, but think it’s great,” says Hamill. Next up for MADD: A campaign promoting its new cartoon character, Sober Man.
