Rabbi Schneerson, Lubavitcher Leader, Dies

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, who transformed the ultra-Orthodox Lubavitcher movement into a major force in Judaism, died today at age 92.

Schneerson, the grand rabbi of the Lubavitchers since 1950, died at 1:50 a.m. EDT in Beth Israel Medical Center, shortly after the Jewish Sabbath ended, said Rabbi Yehuda Krinksy, spokesman for the sect.

Schneerson had suffered a stroke in March, 1992, and another one March 10.
