Drummen’s Luck Changes in Street Stock Victory

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In six years of racing at Saugus Speedway, Jeff Drummen has not had much success.

In fact, the Northridge resident had won just one race in his career and struggled with engine troubles much of this season.

But in Saturday night’s 25-lap Street Stock oval, things changed.

Drummen took the inside lane while lapping Dustin Shepphird on the 10th lap, and slid past pole sitter Kirk Miller of Alta Loma on turn one before pulling away to an easy victory. “Miller went high and I just dove down and was able to get past,” Drummen said. “Then we took off like a rocket ship.”

Miller finished second, with Whittier’s Greg Benner and San Pedro’s Mike Price third and fourth. Street Stock points leader John Schultz of Valencia, who had to transfer into the race from the semi-main event because of a mechanical problem in qualifying, finished sixth.

Results from the 75-lap Sportsman Championship Series and the 15-lap Street Stock figure eight feature races were unavailable at press time.

In the 20-lap Pro-Four Modified main event, 72-year-old Gregg Symonds of Agoura Hills posted his first career victory.

Mal Borders of Van Nuys was second and North Hollywood’s Garrett Yamada was third.

Bob Kluck of Huntington Beach also won his first race, taking the 20-lap Mini Stock main event.
