Toyota Shifts U.S. Truck Production: Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. plans to move all production of its compact pickup trucks for the U.S. market to its joint venture plant in Fremont, Calif. New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., the venture with General Motors, is scheduled to pick up the production of tens of thousands of the trucks from Hino Motors Ltd. in Japan, beginning with the 1995 models. Toyota said the decision will help it avoid currency problems and U.S. tariffs, which total 25% on each pickup imported from Japan. A New United Motor spokeswoman said the plant is expected to produce between 125,000 and 150,000 pickups next year.
