A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life. --Oscar Wilde

Who Buys Ties: About 60% to 65% of ties are purchased by women, according to the Neckwear Assn. of America.

Tie Trivia: Silk represents more than 40% of the market. Polyester, wools and wool blends are common. Acetate, rayon, nylon, cotton, linen and ramie are sometimes used.

To pamper your tie:

* Always hang it up after use to remove wrinkles. The exception: knit ties, which should be rolled up and stored in a drawer to prevent stretching.

* Dry clean it once a year, or as needed for staining. Make sure the dry cleaner has the special equipment needed for ties.

* If you get a spill on a silk tie, don’t try to rub it out with water or soda water. Just blot with a damp paper or cloth.
