Titans’ Ricabal Signs Free-Agent Deal With Dodgers

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Dan Ricabal, who was not picked in the amateur draft, has signed a free-agent contract with the Dodgers and has been assigned to the team’s Yakima, Wash., rookie league team.

Ricabal finished his senior season with a 12-1 record and a 2.84 earned-run average after a troubled early season in which he walked 23 batters in 27 1/3 innings. Ricabal was the winning pitcher in two games in the College World Series and in two in the NCAA Midwest I regional.

Dave Harrison, a 6-foot-7 forward for Mt. Hood College in Gresham, Ore., has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Cal State Fullerton.

Harrison averaged 19.5 points and 13.6 rebounds for a team that was 18-11.

“I think he has an opportunity to be a real good player for Fullerton,” said Fred Schnell, his coach. “He has good quickness, is very athletic and loves the up-tempo game.”

Carrie Vaughn, a former captain of the Cypress girls’ tennis team, has been hired as the school’s boys’ tennis coach.

Vaughn, who will graduate from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this summer, replaces Ken Nakama, who was the coach for two seasons.

Jamie McCance has been hired as the Servite golf coach. McCance, a teaching golf professional at Fullerton Golf Course, takes over for John Ebbe, who resigned after coaching for two years.

Four women’s soccer players with local ties have signed letters of intent to play for Southern California College.

The school’s recruiting class includes Staci Bumstead, Dawn Chastain, Meggan Fleener and Jamie Gardiner. Bumstead, a sophomore defender-midfielder, is transferring from Cypress College and is also a graduate of Esperanza High.

Chastain (Esperanza) and Fleener (Newport Harbor), midfielders, will be freshmen. Gardiner, a forward, is a 1993 graduate of Sunny Hills. She is transferring from Houghton College in New York.

Tina Daly, a left-side hitter from Edison, signed a letter of intent with Indiana State, Edison girls’ volleyball Coach Dave Mohs said. Daly, an All-Sunset League selection, helped Edison finish third in the Sunset League and advance to the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals.

Four county high school football players have been selected to play in the Southern California Catholic All-Star Football Classic, scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cerritos Gahr High.

Mater Dei, runner-up in Southern Section Division I, received invitations for three of its players. Defensive lineman Brandon Gamboa (5-11, 230 pounds), linebacker Jason Rivera (5-9, 207) and tight end-linebacker Pete Silvey (6-3, 225) join defensive lineman Jim Ahern (6-1, 230) of Servite in representing the county.
