VENICE : Former Olympian to Start Race

Former Olympian Rafer Johnson will send runners on their way Saturday in the sixth annual Venice 5-K and 10-K Run/3-K Walk.

In honor of Father’s Day, special prizes will be awarded to parent-child teams in the three races. Other prizes go to the top three finishers in 14 age groups, plus a wheelchair division. The race, sponsored by Gold’s Gym and the Venice Chamber of Commerce, begins at Rose Avenue and Hampton Drive.

Participants can register at Gold’s Gym from 4 to 8 p.m. today and Friday, and Saturday starting at 7 a.m. The cost is $20. Participants will get an event T-shirt, and a share of the proceeds goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Venice.

The five-kilometer race begins at 8 a.m., the 10-kilometer one at 8:30 a.m., and the three-kilometer walk at 8:35 a.m.
