Time for Society to Mother Moms

Share

Thank you for Shari Roan’s “The Fourth Trimester” (May 24). Roan clarifies the distorted assumption that women recover from childbirth in four to six weeks.

Our culture has lost the time-honored traditions of “mothering the mother.” Consequently, we have seen a rise in postpartum mood disorders and family crises due to childbirth.

As a response to this, Jewish Family Services has a support group, “New Moms,” which brings mothers together to nurture each other and provides information and referrals to address symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety.
