LAST RITES: Ronald Lyle Goldman hasn’t attracted as much media attention as Nicole Brown Simpson, O. J. Simpson’s slain ex-wife. But memories of Goldman’s friendly ways captured the hearts of about 400 mourners in Westlake Village (A1). . . . It was in character for the former Oak Park man to deliver prescription glasses left at the restaurant where he worked, his father said, and that act of kindness may have led him to his death. “The world may impose upon us violence,” Rabbi Gary Johnson eulogized, “but we must respond with a loving embrace.”

LAST ROAR: They’re Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions, the only African team ever to make it to World Cup quarterfinals. And 4:30 Saturday afternoon will be the last chance to see them practice at Oxnard College. . . . It may be your only shot to see any World Cup team practice. The Indomitable Lions are the only World Cup team brave enough to open their practice to the public, officials believe. Security is tight, though. Expect metal detectors. And bring a photo ID.

POWER STROKE: Many girls competing in tennis tournaments lend themselves an extra hand to strengthen their backhand. It’s become common practice among teen-age competitors, ever since Chris Evert made it popular. . . . But Monique Allegre, a powerful 16-year-old from Camarillo High School, has dropped the two-handed stroke so it won’t slow her down (C12). And at this weekend’s junior sectional championships, the 11th-seeded player in Southern California will try to break into the Top 10.

JUNETEENTH: Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. But news traveled slow during the Civil War. And slaves in Texas weren’t informed of their freedom until June 19, 1865, about 2 1/2 years later. For generations, African Americans in Texas have celebrated that moment of freedom. And “Juneteenth” celebrations have spread. On Saturday, the county’s African-American Chamber of Commerce sponsors a daylong celebration at Oxnard Community Center Park.
