BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Barnes Comes to Bullpen From Indians
The Dodgers, trying to improve their bullpen, acquired left-hander Brian Barnes from the Cleveland Indians for minor league third baseman Eddie Lantigua, who was playing for Class-A Bakersfield.
Barnes, 27, who also pitched for the Montreal Expos, will be with the team for tonight’s game. To make room for Barnes on the roster, the Dodgers optioned left-hander Al Osuna to triple-A Albuquerque. They also designated pitcher John DeSilva for assignment.
Barnes was 0-1 with a 5.40 earned-run average in six games with the Indians. More recently, he appeared in 13 games with the Indians’ triple-A team at Charlotte, N.C., and had an 0-1 record with one save and a 3.93 ERA, but 23 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings. Barnes, who began his professional career as a starter in the Montreal organization in 1989, had his best season in 1992, when he was 6-6 with a 2.97 ERA in 21 games with the Expos.
Osuna struggled with consistency, yielding runs in four of 15 appearances. His record was 2-0 with a 6.23 ERA.
