From Staff and Wire Reports

Moses Malone’s second tour of duty with the Philadelphia 76ers is over.

Malone, 39, was waived Friday.

He had been acquired as a free agent last August to serve as a backup and mentor to the 76ers’ $44-million draft pick, Shawn Bradley. Malone averaged 5.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 11.2 minutes a game last season.

His numbers were a lot more impressive in his previous stint with Philadelphia. He played there from 1982-86, leading the 76ers to the NBA championship in 1983. Malone, a three-time most valuable player, also has played for Buffalo, Houston, Washington, Atlanta and Milwaukee in 18 pro seasons, the second-longest career in the league’s history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s, which lasted 20 seasons.

Malone is the only remaining NBA player to have played in the old American Basketball Assn.
