ROE WAY: Remember all the criticism Madonna got from feminists who felt that her 1986 hit “Papa Don’t Preach” was an anti-abortion message?

Well, guess who’s contributed a new song to an album supporting abortion rights?

Bingo!

Madonna’s “Goodbye to Innocence” will only be available on Sire Records’ “Just Say Roe” album, the seventh and most politically pointed in the company’s series of budget-priced sampler collections.

Sire general manager Howie Klein says that the album, due in stores July 19, is meant both to raise discussion of the issue and to provide exposure for some of Sire’s lesser-known artists. The inclusion of the Madonna track will certainly increase both elements, as will the low price.

“We’re trying to make it so stores will sell it for about $7,” Klein says.

Some stores might not sell it at all, though. Despite the presence of an otherwise unavailable Madonna song, the hot topic is expected to scare off some stores and chains with conservative leanings.

Spokesmen for both the generally conservative Blockbuster Music Plus chain and for Handelman, a company that buys music products for such mass merchandisers as Wal Mart and K mart, say that no determination has been made yet whether their companies will carry the “Roe” album.

Also on the album are songs written specifically for the topic by John Wesley Harding and Danielle Dax, as well as a version of “I Am Woman” by the Waterlillies and Belly’s take on “It’s Not Unusual.” Liner notes were written by the National Abortion Rights League.
