For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* Water tomatoes, melons and cucumbers deeply every five to seven days for large crops.

* Dust grapes with sulfur for powdery mildew and bunch rot.

* Fertilize fuchsias and tuberous begonias with fish emulsion.

* Plant vinca for beautiful flowering color through the heat of summer and fall. Available in white, pink, purple, lavender and with contrasting eye.
