Though well written, your article made it appear as though leaders of the church prefer to have believers accept, without question, what we’re told. On the contrary, the doctrines and leaders of the church have always encouraged members to pray and ponder and gain a testimony of the Gospel, whether contained in the Scriptures or received as modern-day revelation. Part of that testimony entails faith in our leader. The doctrines of the church will not change to cater to people who cannot accept God’s teachings.

This brings me to my second point. Your writer commented that Jesus “chose only men as his disciples.” Anyone who is a member of the church knows that we are all engaged in God’s work; whether as disciples, leaders, teachers, or mothers and fathers.

New leader--The name of the new president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Howard W. Hunter, was misspelled in a photo caption in the June 20 letters section.

Discipleship is not limited to a position with a title. Being 31 years old I am the perfect candidate for the feminist movement. However, it is unavoidably apparent that men and women are different. Though equal in God’s eyes, we have different abilities with different responsibilities. Women’s organizations in the church have an enormous amount of influence. I truly feel that women who have let their desire to hold the priesthood blind them to the truthfulness of everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ have no concept of their abilities and responsibilities as women.

One final note, I totally support President Hunter’s call for harmony. We live in a selfish world. Many beautiful things can be accomplished by working together.
