Where Are They Now? : MAURY WILLS

Times staff writer David W. Myers catches up with former Dodgers and Angels

Wills has been credited with single-handedly reviving the art of stealing bases. The 50 he stole in 1960, his first full season in the majors, were the most by anyone in three decades. When he shattered a 47-year-old record by stealing 104 in 1962, it was considered such a feat that some baseball experts wrongly predicted it would never be broken.

Wills retired after the 1972 season, but his 490 steals as a Dodger remain a club record. At 61, he owns Maury Wills Cellular, a Carson company that sells car phones and pagers. He also works as a free-lance base-stealing coach for the Dodgers and other major league teams.
