GM Electric Cars Arrive for Volunteer Test Drives: To the tune of “Little Deuce Coupe,” eight sporty, two-seat, General Motors Corp. electric vehicles rolled into the parking lot of a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power maintenance facility for testing by 80 Southland drivers, beginning the first week in July. The DWP and Southern California Edison Co. will loan the Impact IVs over the next six months to commuters chosen from among 10,000 volunteers in the Los Angeles area. GM representatives said the company has other “parallel” electric vehicle programs in progress and that no specific vehicle has been chosen to meet the 1998 deadline to introduce zero-emission cars in California showrooms.
