Robert Vosper

It was wonderful to read the fine editorial (May 30) about Robert Vosper, the recently deceased UCLA librarian. When as a newly discharged GI in 1946 I decided to use the GI bill to get a college education, I chose UCLA and to augment the GI benefit program, I got a job as a page in the reserve book room. I did not know it at that time but my lifelong profession had been chosen for me.

At that time, when Lawrence Clark Powell was university librarian, there was a friendly, warm man whom everyone called Bob as acquisitions librarian. It is no wonder that with such examples I chose librarianship. I have been fortunate enough to work on both the East Coast and the West Coast and in many types of libraries, and have never regretted, indeed, have gloried in my choice and the wonderful, exciting life it has afforded me.

With the electronic information highway hypnotically flashing before us, I hope there are Bob Vospers and Larry Powells that take the time to talk to and, by example, to guide young novices along the way.
