GOLF ROUNDUP : Four Are Tied for Lead at Hartford

Clark Dennis, who finished sixth in the U.S. Open, was the only player without a bogey Thursday and was tied with Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin and David Frost after the first round of the Greater Hartford Open at Cromwell, Conn.

Each of the players shot five-under-par 65s, one stroke ahead of a group of six players--Greg Kraft, David Toms, Peter Jordan, Dave Stockton Jr., Mike Reid and Steve Elkington.

John Daly was in a group at 68 and Greg Norman, playing in the tournament for the first time since 1985, shot a 69. Defending champion Nick Price had a 70.

Tom Weiskopf made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to complete a record-tying 65 and take a one-stroke lead over three players after the opening round of the Senior Players Championship at Dearborn, Mich.

Eunice Choi of Dove Canyon was one of 32 golfers to advance to match play at the in the U.S. Women’s Public Links played Thursday at the 5,802-yard Tam O’Shanter course in Canton, Ohio.

Choi shot a 74-74 for a two-day total of four-over 148. The championship concludes Sunday.

Terry Noe of Fullerton shot a final-round 72 to finish third in the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Mission Hills Desert tournament played on the par-72 course in Rancho Mirage. Joel Kribel of Pleasanton shot a 74-71-72 for a three-day total of 217 to win the tournament.

John Park of Fullerton shot a 76-75-76 for a 227. Jimmy Lee of Irvine and David Searle of Huntington Beach each had a three-day total of 230.
