GOLF ROUNDUP : Four Are Tied for Lead at Hartford

Clark Dennis, who finished sixth in the U.S. Open, was the only player without a bogey Thursday and was tied with Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin and David Frost after the first round of the Greater Hartford Open at Cromwell, Conn.

Each of the players shot five-under-par 65s, one stroke ahead of a group of six players--Greg Kraft, David Toms, Peter Jordan, Dave Stockton Jr., Mike Reid and Steve Elkington, who is playing in his first tournament since undergoing sinus surgery.

John Daly was in a group at 68 and Greg Norman, playing in the tournament for the first time since 1985, shot a 69. Defending champion Nick Price had a 70.

Tom Weiskopf made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to complete a record-tying 65 and take a one-stroke lead over three players after the opening round of the Senior Players Championship at Dearborn, Mich.

In putting together the best opening round in tournament history, Weiskopf held off Lee Trevino, Mike Hill and Dave Stockton.

Tiger Woods of Cypress and medalist Steve Woods were among eight players who advanced to the quarterfinals of the six-day state amateur championship at Pebble Beach.

The winners of this morning’s quarterfinals will play in the semifinals this afternoon. The 36-hole finale will be played Saturday.

Tiger Woods, 18, was two under par in a 3-and-2 victory over Kevin Riley of San Diego. Steve Woods, a senior-to-be at San Jose State, was three under in a 6-and-4 victory over Chris Berry of Yorba Linda. Mark Johnson, Tim Hart, Steve Burdick, Todd Andrews, Kevin Marsh and Ed Cuff also advanced.
