Derya Buyukuncu continued his dominance at the Swim Meet of Champions, winning the 50- and 200-meter freestyle events Saturday at the Marguerite Aquatic Complex.

Buyukuncu, 17, took an early lead in the 200 free, but was challenged by fellow Turk Ugur Tanner in the last 25 meters of the race. “I could see that Ugur was coming up, but I was able to hold on and win the race,” said Buyukuncu, who won the 100 free and set a record in winning the 200 backstroke Friday.

Buyukuncu’s winning time of 1 minute 52.62 seconds in the 200 was two seconds faster than a senior national qualifying time and .20 faster than Tanner’s finish.

Even though Buyukuncu doesn’t like to swim the 200, Irvine Novaquatics Coach Dave Salo put him in the event anyway. “Sometimes I don’t think Derya really knows what he wants to swim,” Salo said, noting that this was the second time Buyukuncu swam the 200 meters.

In the 50 free, Buyukuncu held off a strong field, which included Tanner and University of Calgary’s Steve Vandermeulen, to win in 23.84, .60 of a second off the meet record.

In the 400 individual medley, Curtis Myden of the University of Calgary led nearly the entire race in beating former Laguna Hills star Chad Carvin. Myden’s winning time was 4:28.27.

In the women’s 400 individual medley, Michael Flaherty of the Trojan Swim Team was able to fend off a couple of 13-year-olds to win in 4:59.08. Jennifer Parmenter, swimming for Canyons, was second in an impressive 4:59.37, followed by Monica Shannahan of Blue Fins in 5:02.26. Parmenter’s swim was a senior national qualifying time.

Rae Abbott of Hyack Swim Club finished first in the women’s 200 breaststroke (2:39.83) and Michael Mason of the Trojan Swim Club took first in the men’s 200 breaststroke (2:18.83).

In the 200 free, Janet Evans couldn’t catch Marianne Limpert of the University of Calgary, who finished first in 2:03.07, .32 seconds faster than Evans.
