World IN BRIEF : RWANDA : Rebel Attacks Delay Evacuations
Huge explosions erupted on Mt. Kigali, the last hilltop in government hands overlooking the Rwandan capital, after hours of rebel bombardments brought humanitarian operations to a standstill. Dozens of casualties poured into the Red Cross hospital on the government side as rebel mortar bombs exploded all around. The Red Cross aborted plans to evacuate about 60 wounded from its overflowing hospital across the battle lines to the King Faisal hospital. The U.N. Assistance Mission again put off the evacuation of 200 people--mostly unaccompanied Tutsi children--from the St. Michel church in government territory.
