AUTOS : It’s a Crude Joke: Gas Prices Pump Up Just in Time for a Fourth of July Trip

Compiled by John O'Dell, Times staff writer

Don’t look for gasoline prices to fall any time soon--the Fourth of July weekend typically brings the highest costs of the summer travel period.

The Automobile Club of Southern California says the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline has jumped 7.1% since March--to $1.20 a gallon from $1.12.

The good news is that the average is a little lower than last year. The bad news is that crude oil hit a 14-month high 12 days ago, and that is likely to cause prices at the pump to rise another penny or so a gallon by early July.
