Chicken Bowling

Share

On opening The Times on June 17, I found something that disturbed me greatly. On A2 there was a picture of a refugee in Rwanda who is struggling to recover from malnutrition. On the following page there was an article about the “chicken war” featuring a picture of “chicken bowling.” Chicken bowling involves using a frozen chicken as a bowling ball.

On seeing these two pictures I became so angry and ashamed of being an American. The people in this country cannot possibly begin to understand the suffering that the people of Rwanda and other people in the Third World countries have to endure. Yet it seems that we don’t care, when I look at the paper in the morning and see “chicken bowling” in the front section.

I am not asking you to set out and change the world. I am a 17-year-old who wishes that with one wave of the wand all could be set right in the world. I know that this can’t happen. I had to, however, let my voice be heard.
