LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Judges Meet to Review MTA Labor Dispute

Three retired state judges met Wednesday to review a labor dispute involving the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and two unions.

The transit agency’s contracts with the United Transportation Union and the Transportation Communications Union expire today.

The judges were appointed to the Board of Investigation by Gov. Pete Wilson after the unions requested the governor’s involvement in efforts to resolve contract negotiations with the transit agency.

In an effort to avoid a strike, either management of a public transit agency or a labor union in contract negotiations can request the governor’s assistance under the state Labor Code. After conducting public hearings, the Board of Investigation has until Wednesday to issue a report to Wilson. No strike or walkout can occur during their review.
