Unwed Parents

George Will demands the reinstitution of the stigma upon “young women who, by behaving irresponsibly, deserve a badge of dishonor” for becoming pregnant out of wedlock (Column Right, June 19).

Ironically, as this piece ran on Father’s Day, he never once sees fit to mention either the word father or to suggest that similar stigmas, penalties and dishonors be heaped upon the young men who bear equal responsibility for these pregnancies. Although I share Will’s concern with the number of poorly parented children we have in the U.S. today, I do not share his opinion that singling out and scapegoating women is a solution to the problem.
