DOVE CANYON : Homemade Bombs Defused, Teens Held

Share

Two homes were evacuated Wednesday while sheriff’s deputies deactivated explosives found in a back yard and driveway.

A homeowner called the Sheriff’s Department about 5 p.m. after discovering plastic one-liter bottles containing chemicals, Lt. Daniel Martini said.

A hazardous-devices squad defused them and found three other bombs that already had exploded at the same home, causing extensive damage to the driveway and landscaping, Martini said.

Investigators later arrested two 16-year-old boys, one from Dove Canyon and one from Lake Forest, on suspicion of making the explosives, a felony. The boys were released to the custody of their parents.

Police said the devices apparently were made in the boy’s Dove Canyon home and thrown over a hillside, landing in a driveway and back yard, Lt. Daniel Martini said.

No one was hurt, but the explosives could have caused “extensive damage” in the neighborhood, populated mostly by young families with children, Martini said.
