Cheng, Feng Win in Table Tennis

Yinghua Cheng won the men’s division and Amy Feng won the women’s division at the National All-Star table tennis competition Thursday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The event was a preliminary to the U.S. Open championship singles competition, which starts today and concludes Monday. The men’s open winner earns $10,000 and the women’s champion receives $5,000.

Cheng, from Potomac, Md., beat David Zhuang, 21-10, 21-15, 21-14, for the title in the event that was open only to those eligible for the U.S. Olympic team. Cheng, ranked 39th in the world, is the defending U.S. Open champion.

The other favorites in the men’s division are Jorgen Perrson, ranked 11th in the world and Patrick Chila, ranked 26th.

Feng, from Wheaton, Md., beat Lili Yip, 21-13, 21-15, 17-21, 21-14. Feng, along with Jun Gao and Jing Chen are favored in the women’s competition.

Gao is ranked third in the world and Chen is ranked sixth. Chen is the defending U.S. Open champion.
