Tropical Storm Brewing

MIAMI —
A band of thunderstorms in the Gulf of Mexico strengthened Friday and was expected to become the season’s first tropical storm, weather forecasters said. With sustained winds of 35 m.p.h., the system was near the 39 m.p.h. threshold needed to become a named tropical storm.
