THOUSAND OAKS : Candidates Sought for Trails Committee

Thousand Oaks open space advocates are looking for local residents to represent bicyclists, horseback riders and hikers on a trails advisory committee.

The Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency announced it is accepting applications for three open spots on the committee, which helps establish policy for the use of the city’s 75 miles of trails.

“What we’re looking for are people who have a strong interest in our open space and who know a lot about any aspect of our trail system,” said agency board member Rorie Skei. The board will select the three new committee members.

Over the past several years, the nine-member Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee has undertaken projects including trail patrols, trail workdays, outdoor education days and trail appreciation days, Skei said.

“What they’ve been able to do has been nothing short of amazing,” she said. “We’re hoping to maintain the kind of dedication that has gotten us this far.”

The open space agency that oversees the committee operates through a partnership between Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Recreation and Park District. It will oversee the selection of candidates at its Sept. 14 meeting, said spokesman Mark Towne.

Traditionally, each of the three candidates selected represents one of the three major trail-user groups--equestrians, cyclists and hikers. Each committee member serves a three-year term.

Application forms are available at the city clerk’s desk at Thousand Oaks City Hall, 2400 Willow Lane, or at the Conejo Recreation and Park District office, at 155 E. Wilbur Road. The forms must be turned in to the clerk’s office by July 21.
