Remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto unloaded torrents of rain on Georgia for the second straight day Tuesday, forcing hundreds from their homes and causing the death of a woman whose car went out of control on a flooded road.

The storm dumped more than a foot of rain on parts of the north and central sections of the state.

Mudslides were reported in several areas, and the dam of the Lamar County reservoir broke, forcing the evacuation of residents downstream. In Taylor County, a dam broke and heavy flooding washed out 10 bridges.

In Coweta County, one of the worst-hit areas, 180 families had to evacuate a trailer park in the early morning hours. Several feet of water sloshed through the swingset and slides of the children’s playground.

“I looked out my door; the water was rushing up like the Chattahoochee River,” Hazel Dykes said.

As they were being evacuated at 3 a.m., Dykes watched her porch, ripped loose by the surging water, float away into the night.

In College Park, a suburb of Atlanta, Kenny Marmon and his family waited out the storm at a shelter at North Clayton High School with about 75 of their neighbors from a mobile home park.

Just south of Atlanta, some residents had to be evacuated by boat, and in Crawford County, 58 Girl Scouts were evacuated from their camp to a shelter at a school.

Teresa Beyah, 31, was killed Tuesday when she lost control of her car at a flooded intersection in Spalding County.
