A little fanfare, please, for . . . the Official L.A. Fertilizer! The paychecks for L.A. city employees now carry ads trumpeting, “Top Gro: L.A.’s own compost, for sale at Fedco & Armstrong’s.”

Ron Larson of Armstrong’s confirmed that the West L.A. home and garden store carries the product, which is recycled from the city’s sewage.

We’re sure the L.A. City Council contributed its share.

It isn’t easy recognizing a gourmet in L.A.: Sara Lessley reports that she pulled up to a stoplight in Pasadena next to a car full of tattoo-bearing, bandana-wearing young men who were playing loud music.

“One yelled, ‘Hey!’ out the window to me and my infant son,” she says. “Startled, I looked over, visions of drive-bys in my head. Instead, he asked, ‘Do you have any Grey Poupon?’ ”

Then he and Lessley both laughed and drove off.

In self-defense: Jerry Cowle of Pacific Palisades sees no reason to take down the somber black netting around the City Hall tower. But he does recommend one addition to the curtain--a subconscious suggestion, emblazoned in white letters: “KARATE BLACK BELT.”

Cowle adds: “When you come down to it, that’s what every Angeleno needs these days.”

They must rise late in Westwood: A notice on a post office box on Gayley Avenue says: “Early Bird Collection Box--deposit mail here for 12 noon pickup.”
