Boone to Run for College Board

Karen Boone, who was appointed to the board of the Ventura County Community College District two years ago, has announced she will seek election in November to the five-member panel.

The 37-year-old trustee, who represents the Ventura area, said she wants to achieve several goals over the next four-year term. “I’ve got concerns about the fiscal condition of the district,” she said. “Building up the reserves is a priority for me.”

Boone moved to California almost seven years ago from Michigan, where she worked as a bookkeeper and a department manager for a retail store. She said her accounting background will continue to aid her in making sound financial decisions for the three-campus district.

“I’d also like to focus on streamlining various processes within the district, like student registration,” Boone said. “That needs to be more efficient and more expeditious for the students.”

She also said she would like to establish an annual math and science fair to promote interest in those subjects among high school students who plan to attend one of the three colleges.

Boone, a homemaker, was appointed after Trustee Greg Kampf resigned to take a job out of state.

The candidate filing period for elected positions on the November ballot opens July 18. Two other seats on the college district governing board also will be contested this fall.
