Share

New Horizons, a nonprofit organization providing housing for mentally retarded people in the San Fernando Valley, will celebrate its 40th anniversary today with a groundbreaking for two new group homes.

Supporters of the organization, which currently operates seven homes, will gather at the New Horizons headquarters at 15725 Parthenia St. at 5:30 p.m. for festivities.

The evening will serve as a fund-raiser for the planned group homes, group spokeswoman Gloria Griskevitch said.

Construction of the homes--one at 8733 Haskell Ave. and the other at 15917 Chase St.--is scheduled to begin in November, Griskevitch said. Residents will be moving in about this time next year.

Following groundbreaking ceremonies, Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar) will speak. Afterward, an optional $40-a-plate benefit dinner will be served.
