TOUR DE OVER: The wheels came off Friday for cyclist Greg LeMond. He dropped out of the Tour de France (C11), and his future as a top rider may be uncertain. . . . But former U.S. cycling champion Barry Wolfe, 62, of Woodland Hills says LeMond will always be special. “He put U.S. cycling on a new level,” Wolfe said.

NEW NAME: The rebuilt Golden State-Antelope Valley Freeway interchange reopened Friday, and was renamed after the police officer who died there after the quake (B1). But the event got off to a quick start, so his fellow cops missed the big moment. . . . They’ll get another chance, however, in a few months. “We’ll do something more official when the signs are made,” said Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar).

GOOD GAME: Bryan LaCour didn’t start for his team during its first Olympic Festival baseball game. But he certainly knew how to finish. LaCour (above), who attended Chatsworth High, got two hits and played well in the field. . . . “I was kind of mad I didn’t start,” he said, “so I wanted to show something.” (C14)

REST OF STORY: The ancient Israelites got a bad deal from biblical prophets, according to Prof. Ziony Zevit of the University of Judaism in the Sepulveda Pass. Zevit says the prophets called them whore-like for worshiping other deities, but didn’t give the whole story (B11). . . . For modern Bible readers, “it would be as if I wanted to study Catholic doctrine, but all I had were the writings of Martin Luther,” he said.

OTHER GUMPS: Forrest Gump is the big Gump these days, and no wonder. But don’t forget the Gump business in Santa Clarita--you see their name on portable toilets everywhere. . . . “We certainly haven’t been hurt in any way by it,” said Barry Gump, president of Andy Gump Inc., talking about the movie’s ad campaign. “Had we had a little more advance notice, we might have tried to play along with it.”
