Taslima Nasrin

Re “Bangladeshis Clash Over ‘Infidel’ Writer,” July 1: Why are the so-called Muslim fundamentalists so afraid of Taslima Nasrin and her ideas? Do they not realize that God already ensured the equality of women and men over 1,400 years ago in the Koran? Is their belief in God and Islam so weak that they think that Islam itself will be destroyed because of Ms. Nasrin’s writings? Ms. Nasrin has the right to voice her opinions without fear of death. The Koran states that there shall be “no coercion in matters of faith.” The fundamentalists seem to be more afraid of losing their status in a sexist system than they are of Islam’s teachings being distorted.
