Share

The Getty Conservation Institute, in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, the Governorate of Baja California Sur and Amigos del Sud California, is underwriting the restoration of a prehistoric rock art site known as El Raton. The project will document the rock art in the central mountains of the Baja California peninsula, measure the rate of deterioration and seek the best means of preserving the 4,000-year-old paintings. The origins of the mysterious animal, bird and human forms depicted in the cave paintings are not known.

The effort will continue for three years, with the team collecting environmental data, studying water flows in the site and analyzing rock samples and pigments.
