THOUSAND OAKS : City Supports Child Care, Seeks Providers
Flush with $139,500 in federal grant money, Thousand Oaks officials plan to subsidize child-care services for low-income residents in the city’s oldest neighborhoods.
But first, they need to identify day-care providers--from family-based centers to school district programs to the YMCA.
To launch the project, City Council members this week agreed to solicit proposals from qualified providers interested in setting up day-care services in central Thousand Oaks. City officials are especially interested in programs that would care for preschoolers and mildly ill children.
Once proposals are in, a citizens committee will work with city staff to evaluate them.
The city’s $139,500 child-care fund can be used only for capital projects, such as building a new center. But management assistant Dan Severn said council members could also choose to subsidize services by dipping into the social service endowment or other funds.
