Earley Wins One-Meter Diving Event

Brian Earley of Aliso Viejo won the men’s final of the one-meter diving with 755.25 points Friday at the World Diving Trials in St. Peters, Mo.

Summer Brown, a Capistrano Valley senior representing the Mission Viejo Nadadores, was third in the women’s one-meter competition with 551.31 points. Betsy Girvan of Tequesta, Fla., won with 566.64 points.

In the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Tournament of Champions, Kellee Booth of Coto del Caza shot three-over-par 73 Friday to finish second, four strokes behind winner Beth Bauer of Brandon, Fla., at the 6,014-yard Oak Tree County Club course in Edmond, Okla.

Bauer, who trailed Booth by a shot entering the final round, shot a 68 for a four-day total of 289. Santa Ana’s Alicia Allison shot 73 Friday to finish third at 297.

In the boys’ division, Fullerton’s Terry Noe shot 71 to finish at 292, 19 shots off the lead. Robert Floyd of Miami Beach, Fla., shot 68 for the third consecutive day to win at 273, five shots ahead of Jeremy Anderson of Lake Mary, Fla..

Cecelia Ampuero of Newport Beach defeated Christy Propstra of Paradise Valley, 6-0, 6-1, in a quarterfinal match of the Toshiba Tennis Classic at the Beverly Hills Tennis Club. Second-seeded Ampuero advances to the qualifying tournament, which begins July 30 at La Costa Resort.

Magic Johnson is scheduled to play tonight in the ASICS Summer Pro League at UC Irvine’s Bren Center. Magic’s All-Stars will play the NBA Pros, featuring former Cal State Fullerton star Cedric Ceballos and Mark Jackson of the Clippers, at 7:30 p.m. The Lakers will play the Suns at 5:15 p.m.

El Modena High Athletic Director Don Mott said boys’ basketball coach Steve Middleton has accepted a head coaching position Mt. Carmel High in Poway. In one season at El Modena, Middleton led the Vanguards to a 10-16 record.

Mott said he will open the position immediately and probably close it Aug. 1.
