Militants Kill Israeli Officer
Islamic militants shot and killed an Israeli army lieutenant in an ambush Tuesday along the Egypt-Gaza Strip border, the army said.
Izzidin al-Qassam, the armed wing of the Muslim fundamentalist group Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack and called it a response to Sunday’s riots by thousands of Palestinians barred from jobs in Israel.
The slain officer was identified as Guy Ovadia, 23, a deputy company commander.
Palestinian police later arrested three Hamas members, Palestinian sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Hamas has said it will not use violence against the new Arab authority in the self-rule areas, but will continue its attacks on Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers.
